New York native, Dr. Alvenia Derban defines success as anything that allows her to work in a field or area where she is happiest. Dr. Derban sees her success connected to work done without reservation or compensation. Dr. Derban's success comes when her students and peers reach their goals, reminding, "Dr. Derban, I made it".
Like many women in higher education, Dr. Derban began as a faculty member. Her career path now includes serving as interim department chair of mass communication and general studies at Ed Waters U, Dr. Derban embraces students as a servant-leader, embodying "other mothering".
Acknowledging her greatest moment, Dr. Derban sat with her dissertation committee. At the end of her dissertation defense, the chair said, "Dr. Derban, give us a moment to deliberate." Derban did not hear the new title attached to her name. This moment demonstrates her achievement in higher education.
Realizing that not everyone will hear or acknowledge her voice as a value, Dr. Derban shares her greatest challenge. Completing her doctoral degree reaffirmed her personal knowledge of self worth.
